Meta Forex Advisory | Passport Reissue Logistics

Thousands of international travelers face sudden airport denials every year because they misunderstand a fundamental aviation rule: most countries require your passport to have at least 6 months of validity remaining beyond your date of entry. If your passport expires in 5 months, you are effectively grounded. Navigating the renewal (technically called "Reissue") process in India requires strategic timing.

Renewal vs. Reissue: The Legal Difference

In the Indian passport system, there is no such thing as a "Renewal" of an existing booklet. Once an adult's 10-year passport expires, or a minor's 5-year passport expires, a completely new booklet with a new alphanumeric passport number is generated. This is legally termed a "Reissue."

When Should You Apply for Reissue?

You are legally eligible to apply for a passport reissue up to 1 year before the expiry date of your current passport. We strongly advise our clients to initiate the process at the 9-month mark to account for any unexpected Police Clearance delays.

Handling Name Changes After Marriage

One of the most complex reissue scenarios involves a change of surname post-marriage. You cannot simply book a standard reissue slot. The government mandates specific documentation trails to legally alter your identity across international borders.

  • Required Documentation: You must supply a registered Marriage Certificate, or a joint affidavit (Annexure D) along with a joint photograph. If the marriage certificate is unavailable, the complexity of the paperwork significantly increases.
  • Spouse Name Endorsement: Even if you are not changing your surname, we recommend endorsing your spouse's name onto the back page of your new passport during the reissue process. This drastically simplifies future family visa applications (like the US H4 or Schengen dependents).

What Happens to Valid Visas on an Expired Passport?

A common fear is that reissuing a passport will "cancel" a valid 10-year US B1/B2 Visa stamped inside the old booklet. This is false.

When you receive your new passport, your old passport will be physically returned to you with its corners cut (canceled). However, any valid visas inside the old passport remain fully active. When traveling, you simply carry both passports and present them to immigration.
